Group Enters Fray Over Idea to Ban Foie Gras A plan to ban the duck liver delicacy foie gras from Philadelphia restaurants has languished in City Council (see related story), but now a new group is taking up the battle. A local group called Professionals Against Foie Gras is urging City Councilman Jack Kelley to hold a hearing on the idea of banning foie gras. Kelley introduced a bill back in April of 2006 but has never brought it to committee. Attorney Elissa Katz heads up PAFG and she hopes not just for a hearing, but for Council passage: "My other hope is that once restaurant owners, managers, and chefs understand the cruel nature of foie gras, and once customers begin saying you know what, we don't want this, that the restaurants will voluntarily remove the product from their menus." Kelley says he's not ducking the issue, but he wants more time to talk with newer members on City Council about the idea of a ban before holding a hearing. Restaurants that serve foie gras are crying foul.
