Hugs For Puppies E-Newsletter – February 11, 2008

More Restaurants Are Foie Gras-Free!

Over the past week HFP received confirmation from Patou, Bistro St. Tropez, and Bleu Martini restaurant that these establishments (which have occasionally served foie gras in the past) have ended their sale of foie gras! Please read on to the next item to take action now and help us get another restaurant to go foie gras-free!

Take Action Now!

Tir Na Nog is an Irish Bar/Restaurant located inside the
Phoneix Building at 1600 Arch St. Tir Na Nog was recently discovered to be selling foie gras. Protests have begun against the restaurant and it’s crucial that both Tir Na Nog and the Phoenix Building hear from you! We don’t ordinarily ask for calls, but if you can please take two minutes to call in addition to emailing, it will be a huge help!

Please tell them that you want Tir Na Nog to stop selling foie gras. Explain how cruel foie gras is to animals, and how most other restaurants in Philadelphia have already stopped serving it.

Call:
Richard Kling, The
Phoenix Building: 610-660-6637

The Keating Group (owns the building): 610-668-4100

Ken Merriman, Manager of Tir Na Nog: 267-514-1700

Accounting Assistance Sought!  MySpace-Savvy Volunteer Sought!

HFP is currently seeking help in two capacities. First, we are seeking a CPA who is willing to donate their services and audit HFP’s financials for tax purposes. While this is not required by law, we’re seeking to keep everything as orderly as possible as well as achieve certification from several non-profit certification agencies like Independent Charities of America. If you are a CPA or know one, please contact us at info@hugsforpuppies.org! We estimate it will only take a couple hours.

Secondly, we are seeking a MySpace- or Facebook-savvy volunteer (or volunteers) for two purposes. First, to help us expand our presence on MySpace and reach new people. Second, to help us next month with a very important new project. If you’re on MySpace or Facebook and interested in devoting a few hours here or there to help out, contact us at info@hugsforpuppies.org!

Veg Outreach Programs off to a Great Start for 2008!

Our Veg Outreach programs are off to a great start for 2008! In the first six weeks of 2008 we’ve distributed 9,000+ veg leaflets and 5,500+ Veg Starter Kits, and our programs are only going to get stronger as the year goes on! We’ve added 10 new Veg Starter Kit stands throughout Philadelphia, and in the next two weeks new stands will be going up in Baltimore (10 stands) and New Jersey (8 stands) through partnerships with the Baltimore Animal Rights Coalition and NJ-ARA! We’re also investing more in extremely effective internet ads for ChooseVeg.com, and working with NJ-ARA to set up a VegNJ.com website similar to our VegPA.net site (more on those two projects in upcoming e-newsletters).

Cockfighting Ring Busted; Rabbits in Need of Foster Homes

Recently a
Philadelphia cockfighting ring was busted, and 15 rabbits were confiscated by PAWS (Philadelphia SPCA). These rabbits are in desperate need of foster homes to prevent them from being euthanized and to help get them back on their feet (paws?) after living in undoubtedly squalid conditions in a cockfighter’s den. If you can foster (or are interested in adopting) one of these rabbits, please email mperry@sju.edu of PAWS asap!

Animal-Friendly Media: Video Exclusive!

Freshly loaded onto the HFP website is a short film entitled “Fare Deal.” Fare Deal, created by local animal rights activist Dave Turka, profiles four Philadelphians working to help animals in different ways. The 13-minute film profiles Rich Landau (Chef/Owner of Horizons – pictured to the right with wife and Manger Kate Jacoby), Nick Cooney (Director, HFP) and Scott and Allison Geiger (Directors, Club Veg Philly) as they discuss when they went vegan, how they got involved with animal rights, and what it is they are doing to help animals. Check out the video by clicking here (direct link: http://www.hugsforpuppies.org/rotating/faredeal.htm ) !
