Hugs For
Puppies E-Newsletter – January 24, 2007
A New Year, A New Look
Welcome to the new Hugs For Puppies e-newsletter. This will be our new format
to keep you up-to-date on all the events and outreach we have going on, as
well as keep you posted on new animal-friendly products and occasional
animal-related news items.
Before reading further, please take a moment to check out the tab on the
right! That’s where we’ll be listing some our upcoming outreach,
demonstrations, speaking events, and more, so keep a close eye and please
join us in our effective work for animals.
Also, if you haven’t yet done so please take a few moments to check out our
brand new site www.VegPA.net – featuring
over veg-friendly 300 restaurants, grocery stores,
bars, bakeries, and more throughout the state of Pennsylvania. We’ve received
some great coverage for
the site in the City Paper, KYW News Radio, and the Southwest
Philly Review – so spread the word, and please make
use of this handy resource!
We’ve also re-designed our www.HugsForPuppies.org
website, which is now packed with new content including detailed information
on various animal issues, new HFP merchandise, and an exciting HugsTV section featuring dozens of interesting
animal-related videos. The new site also features our 2007 annual report,
detailing the impact we – with your help – were able to have for animals in
the past year.
Fit For Man And Beast
“Education is at the top of the group's priorities. Cooney said weekly
activities like handing out leaflets and protesting at restaurants that serve
foie gras have given the
group a voice and even garnered national attention.”

Two More Restaurants Go Foie Gras-Free!
In the last few weeks, two more restaurants have made the decision to go foie gras-free! Little Fish
restaurant in South Philly has decided to not serve foie
any more, informing Professionals Against Foie Gras
by phone of its decision, and after meeting with Hugs for Puppies last
weekend Zinc restaurant agreed to pull foie gras from its Restaurant Week menu and not serve the dish
in the future. Please take a moment to thank Little Fish and Zinc for their
compassionate decision, and let them know you look forward to patronizing
their restaurant and recommending it to friends!

Rescued Rabbits, Humane Education, Veg Outreach and More: HFP Reports
Despite the wintry cold that’s finally arrived, our Veg
Outreach has gotten off to a good start in 2008 with over 3,200 leaflets
distributed in the first few weeks of the new year. Please join us for our
weekly Saturday (occasionally Sunday) Veg Outreach
in Center City, and if you are free during the weekdays consider
joining us for our College or Center City veg outreach.
Shortly before Christmas HFP helped rescue 38 rabbits from a sickening
backyard meat operation in Michigan. The woman running the operation agreed to shut down her practice and give up the
rabbits, which had been kept in filthy small wire cages their whole lives.
HFP transported the rabbits back from Michigan to Philadelphia and raised money to help cover veterinary costs, and
next month these lucky buns will be heading to a newly-built home at Chenoa
Manor animal sanctuary. Some of these rescued rabbits are up for adoption, so
if you’d like to welcome one into your home visit www.bunsunderthegun.info for more
information. Two of the rabbits
available for adoption are shown above.
HFP has also in recent weeks conducted Humane Education classes on factory
farming in several South
Philadelphia classrooms as
well as at Drexel University’s BCC campus and Our Lady of Fatima school. Next
month we’ll be presenting at additional Philadelphia schools, as well as conducting a presentation on
cosmetics testing to a full school auditorium assembly. If you would like us
to come to your or your child’s school, get in touch! All programs are free.
