Compassion In Fashion” Kick-Off Garners Headlines in Print, TV News

Our “Compassion In Fashion” campaign with Playboy Model Daniela V had its official kick-off last Saturday, garnering very positive coverage on WTXF Fox Evening News as well as headline press pieces in the Philadelphia City Paper and Philadelphia Daily News! From 12 to 1:30, the Humane League and Daniela V teamed up with LUSH cosmetics to hold an outreach event outside of their Walnut St store, promoting their cruelty-free bath and beauty products (products not tested on animals). Then from 2-3:30, over 30 HLP volunteers joined us for a hard-hitting demonstration in front of Burberry’s as part of a national campaign pressuring the store to end its sale of fur garments. Fox News covered the protest with very positive coverage, airing a statement by Daniela as to how Burberry was supporting animal cruelty and why consumers should boycott the store.

Thanks to all who came to join us for this very successful event! Over 1,000 leaflets were distributed, thousands more saw our event, and tens of thousands more were educated about the cruelties of Burberry and the fur industry while watching the evening news! Two Major Outreach Events Coming Up Next Weekend!

Calling all volunteers! HLP will be holding two MAJOR outreach events next weekend, on Friday Sep 5 and Sunday Sep 7, and we are in need of volunteers to help us table and distribute veg leaflets! On Friday, we will be leafleting the rush hour crowd in Center City from 4-6 pm, then tabling and leafleting from 6-8pm in Old City for the monthly First Friday art festivities. In conjunction with our Friday evening outreach event, there will be a small demonstration/outreach event in solidarity with Austrian animal rights campaigners who have been jailed for the past three months on free speech-related charges. Dr. Martin Balluch, the head of the Austrian organization VGT (essentially the PETA of Austria) and 9 others remain jailed without bail and with no legitimate charges other than effective legal campaigning for animals – including passing legislative bans on battery cages, fur farming, and more. For more info on this issue, please visit: http://www.austriasolidarity.com/

Then on Sunday Sep 7, HLP will be tabling all day at Green Fest Philly. This massive event on
South St. is expected to draw over 25,000 people, and provides a perfect audience to educate others about the connections between animal agriculture and global warming (plus the cruelties of factory farming). We will be out from 11 am to 6 pm distributing veg leaflets and tabling, and we need your support to help reach as many people as possible! Come for as long or short as you are able to – we would love your help!

To RSVP for any of the events above, please email info@thehumaneleague.com and we will provide you with more details!

Thank You! Rescued Dog Finds New Life

Mr. Bones, an incredibly sweet dog rescued from the streets of Southwest Philadelphia, has been adopted into a loving home! Mr. Bones (who was named after the fact that when he was found he was so skinny his rib cage was protruding from his body) is just one of the many farm, lab and companion animals rescued this year by HLP!

Eight Rescued Laboratory Rats in Need of Homes

HLP has been contacted about 8 laboratory rats that are in need of a home and will be killed by the University if we are not able to take them in. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting some of these very sweet, friendly creatures, please contact us at info@thehumaneleague.com !

Animal-Friendly Lifestyle: Calling All Rat Guardians!

Our good friends at Rat Chick Rat Rescue have teamed up with a photographer to create a book of portraits of people with their companion rats. The goal of this book is to humanize rats and to get people to accept them as friendly creatures deserving of our respect and affection. If you live with a companion rat and are interested in being in this book, please email Maria at ratrescuephilly@gmail.com
