Humane League of Philadelphia E-Newsletter
Major
Events This Weekend! Many Ways to Help Animals!
Please join the
Humane League of Philadelphia for 3 days of effective action for animals this
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, including major foie gras demos on Saturday June 7! Full details are to the
right, and please email us at info@thehumaneleague.com
if you have any questions or wish to RSVP. If you have problems finding us on
the day of the event, please call 484-904-6004.
Friday: First Friday Veg Outreach in Center City. These always prove to be very
effective, as we reach thousands of city workers going home for the weekend.
Please meet us at the Northwest corner of Broad and Walnut St. at 4 pm!
Saturday: MAJOR FOIE GRAS DEMOS!
Our first big demos of the spring/summer, please
join us to help us have a major impact for the ducks that are being force-fed
inside Hudson Valley Foie Gras every day of the
week! We will be meeting at 5 pm SHARP by the corner of Grape St. and Main St. in downtown Manayunk!
After a long demonstration in Manayunk, we will be
returning to Center City for our next demonstration at Valanni Restaurant (1229 Spruce St.) at 7:30. This is our first visit to Manayunk – please join us to help make this demo as
hard-hitting as possible!
Sunday: Veg Outreach at Gay Pride Parade and
Odunde Festival. These two festivals are major
annual events, which draw a combined 50,000+ attendees. Both have also proved
to have very receptive audiences in previous years! Please join us so we can
reach as many as possible with the realities of factory farming! Meetup and RSVP info are to the right, and we are
currently in particular need of leafletters for the
Odunde festival.
Foie Gras Emails Needed! Please Take
One Minute…
Please take one moment to contact Supper Restaurant AGAIN and
ask them to stop serving foie gras
off the menu! After speaking with Supper’s owner again we believe they are on
the verge of ending their sale of foie gras – but they need to keep hearing from you
to make sure they make the right decision! PLEASE take one minute
to call Supper restaurant and email Supper’s owners, and ask them to do the
right thing and take foie gras
off the menu! Make sure to let them know that you will plan to patronize
their restaurant as soon as foie gras is gone!

Animal Rescue
Updates: Pig Saved! Lab Rats Saved!
Last week, HLP and HLP volunteer George Wissenz transported
a rescued pig from the Rutgers University Agricultural School (where the pig was set to be
slaughtered) to Chenoa Manor animal sanctuary. The pig, one of many bred and
killed in Rutgers’ animal ag
program, was saved by the compassionate intervention of a graduating Rutgers student. Thanks to George for his
hard work in arranging the rescue of this friendly 200 pound pig! At left
– Abner on his way to his new home at Chenoa Manor!
Also, as
announced in last week’s e-newsletter, we have been able to save all of the
University lab rats rescued by the Humane League! All 57 (the number was
lower than we had initially been told by the University) are in or on their
way to their new adoptive homes!
Campaign Updates
Thanks to all who
attended the veg outreach and dinner with Jon Camp
of Vegan Outreach! 7 volunteers joined us for the outreach, handing out a
total of 1,800 leaflets to interested passersby in Center City, while 20 volunteers joined us
for dinner and an inspiring talk by Jon! Special thanks to Jon for making the
trip to Philadelphia to speak to The Humane League!
HLP volunteers have also conducted several protests and leafletings
outside of Valanni Restaurant for their continued
sale of foie gras, with
MANY members of the community expressing their support by refusing to go to Valanni, spreading the word to their neighbors, and
several even asking for No Foie Gras signs to
display in their nearby windows!
An HLP volunteer conducted a humane education class on factory farming at a Philadelphia middle school last week, with the
students so interested in learning more that after the presentation was over
all wanted Veg Starter Kits and DVDs to take home
with them!
HLP volunteers have also been leafleting in several area locations recently.
From January 1 to June 2, 2008, we have distributed a total of
over 45,500 veg leaflets and over 25,000 veg starter kits! (not to mention many thousands of foie gras leaflets as well as
thousands of vegan recipe books, hundreds of veg
DVDs, hundreds of Philly Veg Eating Guides, and
other literature as well!)
