The Humane League of Philadelphia E-Newsletter

Hello Hugs for Puppies supporter! In order to better represent the scope of our work and present ourselves more professionally, we’ve officially changed our name to The Humane League of Philadelphia. As the region’s largest and most active local animal advocacy organization, we believe the new name will help us in getting our message across to the public and in winning campaigns for animals. You can find us online at our new website, www.TheHumaneLeague.com . Our new email address, should you wish to contact us, is info@thehumaneleague.com .

You may have also noticed that you haven’t heard from us as much as usual over the past month. We’ve been busy going through the legal and operational changes necessitated by the name change, as well as producing and distributing our new print newsletter (arriving at your doors this week if it hasn’t already done so) and planning upcoming campaigns. Now, with the weather warmer and the summer almost upon us, we are ready to shift back into high gear with a lot of exciting events as well as weekly veg outreach, demonstrations, and more! Please read on for details, and please mark your calendars for next Saturday May 24, when Jon Camp of Vegan Outreach will be visiting us for a special veg outreach event and dinner!

Special Veg Outreach Event and Dinner, Featuring Jon Camp of Vegan Outreach!

Over the past 5 years, Jon Camp of the fantastic organization Vegan Outreach has distributed booklets on the cruelties of factory farming to hundreds of thousands of students on hundreds of college campuses across the
United States. Vegan Outreach’s generosity and encouragement have made possible the huge growth in veg outreach HLP has been conducting in the Philadelphia area.

Now, recently returned from a two-month road trip of outreach around the U.S., Jon is making time to visit Philadelphia in order to speak to HLP members about his experiences, Vegan Outreach’s efforts and lessons learned, and the crucial importance of educating the public on the cruelties of factory farming. This FREE talk will be held upstairs at Singapore Restaurant (those who wish to eat may purchase dinner), and the event will also be a fundraiser for a major veg outreach tour that HLP will be doing this summer, with auction items for sale and more ways to help out. Also, the event will be preceded by an afternoon of veg leafleting in Center City!

So please mark your calendars and join us for this very exciting and important opportunity to learn more, meet Jon, and support veg outreach efforts in the Philadelphia area!

Event Date: Saturday, May 24

Event Time and Location:

- Meeting for veg leafleting at 18th and Walnut Sts. by the corner of -Rittenhouse Square Park at 2 pm

- Meeting for free lecture, fundraiser and dinner at Singapore Restaurant (1006 Race St) at 5 pm

70 Laboratory Rats to be Killed – Unless We Can Find Homes!

For the third consecutive year, HLP has arranged for the release of laboratory rats from a local University that were going to be killed after being used in pointless and wasteful psychology experiments over the past nine months. Unfortunately this year the number of rats is nearly double what it was in previous years and it is unlikely that we will be able to find homes for all of these rats. (Above is Chase, one of the rats rescued last year from the University)

PLEASE help us to give these very sweet, gentle and friendly white albino rats a chance to experience a real life and a compassionate home, unlike the barren plastic isolation cages that they have known for all of their lives up to this point. Whatever rats we cannot find homes for WILL be killed – please save a life and contact us about adopting.

Rats are generally very easy to take care of and food costs are minimal. All of the rats are male, are people-friendly, and as our adopters from previous years will tell you they are incredibly sweet and friendly. PLEASE email us today at info@thehumaneleague.com if you can adopt, and please spread the word to others. If you absolutely cannot adopt, please consider donating to help us cover the costs of this rescue! You can click here or visit www.thehumaneleague.com/support to donate.

Foie Gras Demos This Friday! And Emails Needed

Please join us this Friday for foie gras demos at two restaurants that have started serving foie gras! We will be meeting at
6 pm Friday in front of Valanni Restaurant at 1229 Spruce St. Please join us to help make these demonstrations effective!

Also, please take a moment to email Valanni, which had previously told us they would not serve foie gras in the future but now they have broken their word and are serving it! Let them know that you will now be boycotting their restaurant and encouraging friends and family to do the same until they have taken foie gras back off the menu! Management told us they doubted that anyone would eat or not eat there in response to their decision on foie gras – please let them know that this is very important to you and that you will only eat at the restaurant if they take foie gras off the menu! It is very important they hear from as many people as possible.

Email: manager@valanni.com, evan@valanni.com, jstrain@valanni.com, promotions@valanni.com

Humane League of Philadelphia Campaign Updates

+ Several big veg outreach days were held over the past few weeks, including our First Friday rush hour veg outreach and veg outreach at the Pride Festival in Old City. Each of those events saw nearly 2,000 leaflets distributed.

+ HLP held its first demos against Valanni for the sale of foie gras two weeks ago, and while we were rained out last weekend we will be returning to Valanni regularly until they take foie gras off the menu.

+ In the coming weeks we’ll have a number of major announcements, including our teaming-up with Playboy model Daniela V in support of cruelty-free fashion; the launch of a new veg-eating website; the launch of a major new campaign; and more! So stay tuned, and get ready to get active for animals this summer!
