Over the past few years HLP has helped rescue many hundreds of animals in both large- and small-scale rescue efforts. This includes rescuing, providing veterinary care for, and re-housing dozens of abandoned or abused cats and dogs; rescuing and re-housing laboratory animals set to be killed at the end of experiments; providing free animal food and supplies to low-income residents of West Philadelphia to help them adequately care for their companion animals; and providing time, money, and energy in emergency rescue situations. For example in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina HLP rescued 250 abandoned cats and dogs that were set to be killed in overcrowded Mississippi shelters. More recenty, in November of 2007 we helped rescue 38 rabbits rescued from horrible conditions in a backyard meat operation. The breeder agreed to shut down her operation, and with the help of HLP the rabbits were brought back to Philadelphia and will find comfort and sanctuary to live out their lives at Chenoa Manor animal sanctuary.

While we are happy to try to provide assistance in animal emergencies we are not a shelter and cannot usually take in large animals (cats or dogs) directly. If you have any questions or wish to speak to us about an animal emergency, please contact us at (484) 904-6004. If we cannot help you with your situation, we will try to refer you to another person or organization that can.

A few of our friends...

3 of 38 rabbits rescued from a backyard rabbit meat operation in Michigan.
Charlie, one of many abused and abandoned West Philadelphia cats that have come through our doors on the way to a better life.
Wilson, one of 88 lab rats used in pointless psychology experiments at a local university. All were going to be gassed if HLP had not been able to step in to provide Wilson and the rest with loving homes.
